On the 6th of August, 2021, we held the 40th Hitotsubashi / Sugiyama Philosophy Forum (also the 99th Meeting for Japan-Germany Association for Applied Ethics). As part of the attempt to revisit the history of philosophy to study the idea of “human dignity”, this meeting reexamined the history of philosophy around Spinoza and Spinozism. Its particular focus was on the revival of Spinoza in 18th-century Germany. He then introduced the idea of “dignity of connected lives” to develop a more comprehensive concept of dignity. Finally, Professor Hitoshi Aoki (Hitotsubashi University) posed the question: “Can we talk about ‘rights’ and ‘dignity’ of animals?” He discussed recent developments, including some difficulties, about animal rights from a legal point of view and concluded that “dignity” of animals has not yet become a fully developed legal concept.

We had an international workshop to discuss various (mainly theoretical) issues of the concept of dignity in Sano-Shoin, Hitotsubashi University, on 3-4 of October, 2019. The workshop began with a welcome speech by Professor Yasushi Kato, followed by Professor Gerhard Schoenrich’s presentation “Dignity or Human Dignity.” He criticized Professor Achim Loemer’s ‘Reduction thesis’ and analyzed the concept of dignity in terms of rational autonomy. Next Professor Keiko Matsui-Gibson discussed “Dignity and Vulnerability”. She shed new light on the idea of dignity by analyzing its usage in literary works such as May Sarton’s As We Are Now from the perspective of care ethics. The first speaker of the second day was Professor Frank Dietrich, who explained a controversial theme of “Genome Editing and the Concept of Human Dignity”. He emphasized huge technical uncertainties, their moral implications, and therefore the need to be cautious in applying the technology. Professor Dieter Sturma’s presentation was about “Person and Dignity”. He briefly reviewed the history of the concept in the West and suggested that the idea could be extended or made more inclusive by reflecting diverse values in the pluralistic, multicultural world today. The last speaker, Professor Arnd Pollman, gave a talk “Protecting Human Dignity”. He summarized various Western roots of the concept of dignity and presented an integrated view after 1945 (the Second World War) where these views were reconstructed or reorganised in terms of protecting human rights.

On September 28, we held the 9th Spinoza Connection at Hitotsubashi Univ.. Prof. Keiji Hirayama (Tokyo Polytechnic Univ.) presented some views on the relationship between the romantic thinker Schiller and Spinoza, centered on the concept of nature. Next, Prof. Kensuke Kasahara (Hosei Univ.) revealed the development of “Spinoza” in 18C Germany, centering on Lessing and Herder. In addition, Prof. Makoto Hamada (University of Tsukuba) and Prof. Sanayuki Nakai (Sophia Univ.) examined how Goethe accepted Spinoza. While the former focused on interaction with Helder, the latter took up his relationship with Jacobi. Finally, Prof. Osamu Ueno (Osaka Univ.) commented that these presentations remind us again how difficult we perceive accurately Spinoza, and as a way to overcome the Spinoza image that has been criticized sharply as the fate theory, we can confirm the attempt to reconstruct into the theory of organisms in the idea of romanticism.

On the 22nd of September, Professor Yasushi KATO was invited to deliver a keynote speech in the 6th Sino-Japanese Philosophy Forum, held at Sun Yat-Sen University, Guanzhou, China. This international conference was held in collaboration with the Japanese Philosophical Association and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Professor Kato’s lecture was entitled “Kant and Habermas on Law and Politics”. It focused on Immanuel Kant’s innovative conception of the “public use of reason”, with a particular interest in its historico-conceptual context, wherein Kant’s framing of the “public” appears to be so original and even bizarre to his contemporary intellectuals that they couldn’t entirely understand his terminology. Paying heed to Kant’s novel distinction between the political aspect of the “public” and the legal aspect of the “state”, the lecture shed new light on the critical dimension of his moral/political philosophy. After the lecture, the audience asked several questions including the one about its implication to the contemporary normative discussion of our age.
