The 40th Hitotsubashi / Sugiyama Philosophy Forum (The 99th Meeting for Japan-Germany Association for Applied Ethics)

On the 6th of August, 2021, we held the 40th Hitotsubashi / Sugiyama Philosophy Forum (also the 99th Meeting for Japan-Germany Association for Applied Ethics). As part of the attempt to revisit the history of philosophy to study the idea of “human dignity”, this meeting reexamined the history of philosophy around Spinoza and Spinozism. Its particular focus was on the revival of Spinoza in 18th-century Germany. In the meeting, taking up one 18th-century German philosopher, each presenter showed how Spinoza had been received or criticized and how these dynamics have opened up a new horizon in philosophy.

The meeting, which consisted of the morning and the afternoon sessions, was held online because of COVID-19, and contained five presentations in total. Professor Osamu Ueno (Osaka University) and Professor Kazuhiko Yoshida (Tokyo International University) were invited as commentators.
The morning session began with a welcome speech by Professor Yasushi Kato (Sugiyama Jogakuen University / Hitotsubashi University), followed by his presentation “Problems of Kant and Spinoza (or Spinozism)”. The second presenter was Professor Yukio Irie, who gave a talk on “Fichte and Spinoza”. After the lunch break, the afternoon session started with Professor Emeritus Yutaka Nakagawa’s “Schelling and Spinoza”. And then Professor Keiji Sayama (Hokkaido University of Education) talked on “Hegel and Spinoza”. As the last presenter, Professor Masahiro Hirao (Ritsumeikan University) delivered a “German Romanticism and Spinoza” speech.

After being partly revised, all presented papers will be published as part of the collection entitled Spinoza and Modern Germany.
