2019年7月20日、一橋大学で、以下の２つの報告を中心とする研究会が開催された。

（１）「『人間の尊厳』概念の歴史的現在――生命倫理問題をめぐって」（小松美彦、東京大学）。日本における安楽死・尊厳死の推進政策の経緯を批判的に検討した。その上で、推進政策の思想的基盤をフーコーの「生権力」論の観点から考察し、さらに、生権力の内奥には、フーコーやアガンベンが看過した西欧に伝統的な「人間の尊厳」概念があることを歴史的に剖検し、実体ではなく人々の関係性として、「ただ存在することの事実」をめぐるものとして、人間の尊厳を捉えなおす志向性を対置した。

（２）「中国憲法史における尊厳概念――その背後にある政治思想」（中村元哉、東京大学）。中国語における「尊厳」という言葉の利用（『荀子』以来）の歴史と概念研究の現状を概観したうえで、その背景にある中国の政治思想を、近現代の中国憲法史をめぐる複雑な歴史的・政治的状況を軸に解説した。現在の中国において、「尊厳」という言葉には、伝統的な「威厳・威信・権威」という意味（国家の尊厳など）と西欧的な意味（人格の尊厳など）が併存していることに注意が必要である。

We had a research seminar on 20th of July at Sano-Shoin, Hitotsubashi University. It had two stimulating talks by two guest scholars as follows.

(1) Title: Conceptual History of "Human Dignity": Issues in Bioethics. Speaker: Yoshihiko Komatsu (University of Tokyo). Professor Komatsu critically examined the history of political promotion of euthanasia and dignified death in Japan. He analyzed their motivation in terms of Foucault's theory of "bio-power" and further identified, at its core, the traditional Western idea of "human dignity," overlooked by Foucault and Agamben. In contrast, he suggested a possible reinterpretation of human dignity, based on the simple fact of someone being there (existence alone), which is not an individualistic, inherent value but more a relational idea between persons.

(2) Title: Concepts of Dignity in the Constitutional History of China: Political Thoughts behind them. Speaker: Motoya Nakamura (University of Tokyo). Dr Nakamura began by reviewing the usage of the word 尊厳 in the Chinese language, since the time of Xun-zi 『荀子』, and its current conceptual studies. He then examined traditional and current Chinese political thoughs behind them by focusing on the complex contexts surrounding modern Chinese constitutions. We have to remember that the Chinese word has both a traditional meaning of authority (e.g., of the state) and a relatively new, Western interpretation (e.g., of a person).
