尊厳という概念は、グローバリゼーションの中で、新たな社会的統合をもたらす理念的な基盤として注目が集まっている。歴史的に振り返れば、尊厳は特に第二次世界大戦以後、法律で謳われ、遵守するように各国で整備が進んだ。しかしこれに加えて、現代にあって尊厳は、先進医療、高齢者ケア、女性や障害者に対する差別、貧困と不平等、移⺠と難⺠、ヘイトスピーチ、生成型AI、ビッグデータ、動物、AIロボットなどを社会がどのように受け入れるかを判断する基準を定める上で、一層、重要になっている。
　しかし尊厳という概念は明確な統一的定義が提示されておらず、複数の理解が交錯した状態にある。西欧圏においては、キケロがそれを社会的地位や身分としたのに対し、カントがこれを人間に内在する絶対的な価値とした。2つは安楽死を認めるか否かという問題へと直結する重要な分水嶺である。また欧米圏と非欧米圏の間で、概念をまとめ上げる試みはまだ今後の課題として残されていると言えるのではないか。
　尊厳をめぐって、こうしたグローバル社会での用命があることを念頭に、国際尊厳学協会では、３つの意味で広く扉を開く。これによって総合的に尊厳について議論できる学術の場の構築を目指すことにしたい。
　まず、欧米圏と非欧米圏を架橋することである。次に、理論研究に限らず、多様な分野の研究者の参加を歓迎する。例えば、教育学・厚生経済学、国際社会学・国際政治学、先端医療技術・生命倫理学、労働経済学、環境倫理学、動物倫理学、憲法学・法学、メディア学などである。さらに協会では尊厳の定義を決めてかかることなく、ネガティブ・アプローチによる尊厳の考察からも、多くをくみ上げていく。
　多様な研究者の参加を期待したい。

　The concept of dignity has been drawing much attention as a theoretical framework for bringing about new social integration amid globalization. Since the end of World War II, international society has sought to observe the subject of dignity in terms of law. Dignity has recently become an important subject in establishing standards for determining how society accepts various issues such as advanced medical care, caring for the elderly, discrimination against women and people with disabilities, poverty and inequality, immigration and refugees, hate speech, Generative AI, big data, animals, and AI robots.

　However, as the concept of dignity has not been presented with an articulate or unified definition, scholars have tended to comprehend it in various meanings. In the Western world, while Cicero considered the concept of dignity a social status or identity, Kant regarded it as an absolute value inherent in humans. These two opinions are crucial watersheds that directly lead to the question of whether euthanasia can be approved or not. Therefore, it can also be said that the attempt to establish the concept between the Western and non-Western regions remains to be seen as a future assignment.

　With the profound mission of dignity at its core, the International Society of Dignity Studies (ISDS) is eager to open its doors in three main pillars. Through the following work, we are committed to establishing an academic forum for discussing dignity in a comprehensive manner.

　Our first pillar is to bridge the Western and non-Western regions in the study of dignity. In addition, we are not limited to theoretical research but also encourage practical applications of dignity in fields such as pedagogy, welfare economics, international sociology, international politics, advanced medical technology and bioethics, labor economics, environmental ethics, animal ethics, constitutional law, and media. Finally, we welcome diverse methodologies of dignity, including negative approaches, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of its multifaceted features.

　We look forward to the vibrant discussions with various participants.
